Warner Bros. is set to release the star-and-Latino-studded film August 18th.

DC Comics enthusiasts were given a glimpse of the upcoming Blue Beetle movie with the release of its first trailer this week. The trailer showcases Xolo Maridueña, known for his role as Miguel in “Cobra Kai,” as he takes on the role of the titular superhero and flies into action.

Directed by Puerto Rican director Angel Manuel Soto, the film tells the story of a young man who becomes one with a supernatural scarab-like creature inside a box he wasn’t supposed to open, evolving into the Blue Beetle.

The trailer shows Susan Sarandon in the role of the villain Victoria Kord, while the remaining Blue Beetle cast is made up of George Lopez, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Trujillo.

The film was originally expected to be released on HBO Max, but will now enjoy a full theatrical release, with plans for IMAX as well. It’s also expected that the film will be released both in English, and in Spanish with English subtitles.

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has let the media know that the Blue Beetle will be independent of other films in DC’s extended universe. However, he did say that it could become its own franchise if it’s successful at the box office.

After the releases of Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, and before Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle will be the third out of four major DC movies that will be released in theaters in 2023.
